A winter storm pushed a mix of snow, rain and freezing rain through the Atlantic region today, resulting in numerous delays and cancellations.

Most schools in Nova Scotia were closed, except for schools along the province’s South Shore.

Public schools on Prince Edward Island were also closed while schools in New Brunswick remained open.

Travellers are being advised to check their flight status before arriving at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, where a handful of flights have been cancelled or delayed due to the storm.

One couple spent the day trying to get to Florida.

“It’s hard because we’re both booked individually instead of as a pair, so we could sort of end up on different flights,” says traveler Donald Corey.

An extra crew was brought in to keep the runways clean but that didn’t help traveller Elvis Snook, who flew in from Newfoundland Sunday and had to spend the night at the airport.

“As soon as we arrived we were notified our flight was cancelled and nothing was available for the evening, possibly something today, maybe even in to Tuesday,” says Snook. “So, I actually booked with WestJet for a 6 a.m. flight, which subsequently got cancelled a half hour after I booked that flight.”

Ashleigh Egar spent the day waiting for her husband to arrive from Saskatoon. He finally made it to Moncton, only to learn the airline planned to send him back to Toronto.

“He and two other WestJet passengers rented a car in Moncton and are driving back right now,” says Egar.

Restrictions are in place on the Confederation Bridge which affects motorcycles and high-sided vehicles, including trucks, tractor-trailers, recreational vehicles and buses, as well as vehicles towing trailers.

In Sydney, snow turned to rain and back to snow again, which made for slick streets. Despite best efforts to prevent slipping and sliding, one driver landed in the ditch in Frenchvale.

“The roads are terrible. It was unbelievable coming up here with the truck,” says firefighter Mike MacPhee. “He’s lucky that’s all that happened.”

Back in Halifax, 263 tickets were handed out to motorists who failed to comply with the city’s overnight parking ban.

The ban will remain in effect from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday.
