One man is facing a number of assault and threat charges following an incident in downtown Halifax Saturday morning.

Around 9 a.m., Halifax Regional Police say officers were notified of a man with a possible firearm in an apartment building on Hollis Street, threatening to harm himself or police.

When police arrived on scene, several units in the apartment building were evacuated as a precaution.

Officers say they made contact with the suspect, along with a woman, who was in the same residence as the man.

Both were taken into custody, and residents were allowed to return to their units.

The investigation is ongoing.

A police presence remains at the scene.
