Crossing the Saint John River in Fredericton is about to get more difficult.

One of the two bridges in the city is undergoing maintenance, which is causing significant morning and evening traffic delays.

Things will get worse before they get better, though, all northbound traffic on the Westmorland will be funneled through a single intersection as the project enters phase two.

Traffic lights will be adjusted, but officials admit that will only help a bit.

“It will favour strong movements that we expect, based on analysis,” says City of Fredericton spokesperson Darren Charters. “We’re hopeful that will help a little bit, but it will not do enough to ease the traffic pain that we probably will experience.”

“I think that people are going to get more, and more angry,” says commuter Marlene Ryan. “I think there’s probably going to be more accidents; people’s blood pressure is going to go up. It’s going to be just awful.”

All the work is scheduled to wrap-up in late August.
