SAINT JOHN, N.B. -- Firefighters remain on the scene of a three-building fire that started early Sunday morning in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Saint John Fire Chief Kevin Clifford says the fire is out but crews are still dealing with hot spots and debris.

Contrary to previous reports that all three buildings were destroyed, Clifford says one building has collapsed while the other two were significantly damaged.

Clifford says fire crews had to cut electricity to a nearby apartment building, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

The Canadian Red Cross says volunteers are providing food and shelter to the six adults and five children who escaped the fire unhurt.

Red Cross spokesman Dan Bedell says the buildings contained several apartments and the retailer Ben's Clothing.
