Federal Transport Minister, Lisa Raitt, told the House of Commons on Monday that Ottawa will not be providing any funding towards saving the rail line between Sydney and St. Peters Junction in Cape Breton, N.S.

The announcement came as a surprise to Nova Scotia’s Minister of Transportation, Geoff MacLellan, who says he was hoping the three levels of government could come up with a solution to save the line.

“We had hoped that with the minister being from Cape Breton and being the transport minister for this file that she would play a role,” he says.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. will apply to abandon part of the rail line after the subsidy agreement with the province runs out at the end of this month.
