The cleanup from last week's rainstorm is ongoing in Hoyt, N.B. as the community tries to recover from being hit with more than 100 millimetres of rain.

Diana Conroy’s home and farm in Hoyt were almost completely consumed by water. She says the community is still stunned by the amount of rain that fell.

“You could only see the tops of my rose bush, that's how high the water went,” she said. “(The rain) flooded the basement out, flooded the shop, the calf barn, the milk parlour.”

Conroy says most of what she lost is not covered by insurance.

Despite the ongoing efforts of Public Works crews, there are still several roads and bridges around the area that remain impassable, requiring alternate routes.

Several school bus routes have been affected by the road washouts.

On Friday, the provincial government said fixing the storm damage is a priority. It also encouraged residents to register damage through a toll-free line.

Conroy says the relief can’t come soon enough.

“I think (the province is) trying to do their best with what they have and I think it is going to be a slow process to get the roads back into shape because there is so much damage,” said Conroy.

The province is waiting to commit to an assistance program until it can assess all the damage.
