City councillors in Fredericton have voted to formally cancel a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in support of the Energy East pipeline.

Mayor Brad Woodside said the letter, which was approved at a closed-door meeting in January, may never have even been sent to Trudeau.

The letter stirred up controversy with opponents saying councillors aren’t supposed to discuss issues, other than confidential matters, off-camera and aren’t supposed to vote off-camera.

Last week, the city acknowledged proper procedures weren’t followed when the letter was approved privately.

Councillors voted Monday evening to revoke the letter.

“This is an issue not meant for a secret closed-door meeting, so we saw tonight that they publicly took back the letter that was sent to the prime minister of Canada,” said Mark D’Arcy, spokesperson for the Council of Canadians.

“It’s not going to happen again.”

Several councillors who voted to rescind the letter said they support the Energy East pipeline, but agreed that the letter should not have been approved.
