Halifax police have called in the provincial police watchdog after it was discovered a man in custody had a broken hand.

Halifax Regional Police say officers went to a residence on Springhill Road in Dartmouth at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday to find a 33-year-old man they say was breaching his conditions of release.

They located the individual and arrested him for breaching court-imposed conditions, and for resisting arrest.

Police say while the man was beingdetained at police headquarters overnight, he reported his hand was injured .

He was taken to hospital where it was determined his hand was broken.

He was treated in hospital and returned to police custody ahead of a scheduled appearance in Dartmouth provincial court Friday afternoon.

Halifax police say they called in the province’s Serious Incident Response Team to investigate the incident because an injury occurred following police involvement.
