A 22-year-old man has been arrested after a pedestrian was struck on the Halifax waterfront.

Halifax Regional Police say the 19-year-old pedestrian was walking along the boardwalk in the 1400 block of Lower Water Street when he was struck by a vehicle around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived, they found the man suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the vehicle involved in the collision had fled the scene.

Later Sunday evening, police arrested a man at a Hammonds Plains, N.S. home. He remains in custody.

Police say both men are known to each other

"We don't believe it was a random act,” says Const. Dianne Penfound, spokesperson for Halifax Regional Police. “With respect to the relationship, we can't speak to it at this point."

The incident is raising some concerns about boardwalk security.

“Seeing something happen so quickly and suddenly here, even though it was a targeted event, goes to show there's an opportunity for worse things to occur,” says local restaurant worker Liam Skrinjaric. “With that in mind, maybe it would be a good idea to look into those preventative measures."

In a satement, Waterfront Development tells CTV News there is security present on the boardwalk 24/7.

“This is a rare incident," the statement reads. "We have bollards and signage in place to help delineate the boardwalk. There are accessible areas that allow for maintenance or emergency vehicles."

There is no word on possible charges at this time.
