A young man is dead after his car collided with a dump truck in Sydney River, N.S. Thursday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the collision at Exit 6 on Highway 125 before 8:30 a.m.

Police say it appears an eastbound car collided head-on with a westbound dump truck. The impact of the crash forced the truck to land on its side.

Both drivers were taken to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the car, a 23-year-old man from Sydney Mines, was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Westbound traffic was rerouted at Exit 7 while eastbound traffic was rerouted between exits 6 and 7. The highway has since reopened to traffic.

Cape Breton Regional Police and the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal assisted RCMP at the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
