HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government has announced that they will be spending $490 million on communities across the province.

Finance Minister Diana Whalen says the investments will be made through the 2015-16 Capital Plan.

"We are releasing the plan now to help businesses prepare for upcoming projects in advance,” she says. [To] allow Nova Scotians to see where their tax dollars are being spent."

Whalen says the Capital Plan will allocate money to schools, hospitals, highways, medical equipment and technology – what the government has referred to as “long-term assets”.

The department of finance announced specific intentions for the Capital Plan. These include: $222.5 million for highways and structures; $114.8 million for buildings and land; $47.4 million for information technology projects; $15.3 million for vehicles and equipment; and $63.8 million for capital grants.

The department also says there are plans to design and build nine schools, and to continue work on the Highway 103 Ingramport Interchange.

The total amount represents an eight per cent reduction when compared to last year's plan.
