Students in Nova Scotia won’t be losing their March Break or Saturdays to make up for snow days after all.

Premier Stephen McNeil said March Break will continue as planned and said it isn’t realistic to expect students to attend school on Saturday.

Last week, Nova Scotia Education Minister Karen Casey said it would be up to school boards to figure out how the lost time will be made up within their existing schedules.

Casey said a number of options were under consideration, including sending students to school on Saturday or over March Break.

However, McNeil said Casey was referring to the fact that as a government, they have very limited choices in light of the collective agreement.

“We are not entertaining those two options at this point, but we have asked boards to go forward and make the decisions internally,” he said.

McNeil said school boards that have had an excessive number of snow days have been asked to look at ways to make up those days.

Options include cancelling field trips or personal development days, although the latter would require the support of the union.
