Election signs have been popping up across the country this summer, but in Parrsboro, N.S., there seem to be a few extra.

Parrsboro is in the middle of a municipal byelection with four candidates vying for one seat that’s been vacant since May.

There was no trouble getting candidates.

“Well as I said before, we take pride in the community and there people, several of them are business people, and they just want to give back to their community,” said Parrsboro Mayor Loid Smith.

Betty Atkinson is one of the candidates. Between the federal campaign and meeting about the possible dissolution of town status, she says it’s been difficult to get voters involved.

“People are meeting-ed out,” said Atkinson. “Just to get them out to vote this time is going to be hard.”

But more people seem to be thinking about summer rather than politics.

“It’s a waste of money,” said voter Jessica Wheaton. “I think that’s for sure. It’s just redundant. It’s the same thing every time there’s an election.”

“We’re having our share of it all at once,” said voter Florence Yorke.  “But, anyway, it'll all be done and over with, I guess.”

The byelection campaign ends on Sept. 5.
