AFTON, NOVA SCOTIA -- The RCMP have charged a woman after an organization that provides employment training for aboriginals in Nova Scotia was allegedly defrauded of more than $350,000 over three years.

An investigation was launched after the RCMP received a complaint from the Paq'tnek First Nation last year regarding the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Mi'kmaq Employment and Training Secretariat.

Police allege more than $350,000 was misappropriated between 2010 and 2013 by a native employment officer.

The secretariat provides human resource programs and services to help aboriginals find and maintain employment, and it is separate from the band.

The Mounties say 38-year-old Dawn Marie Johnson of the Paq'tnek First Nation is due in court Nov. 26 on charges of theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, forgery and uttering a forged document.

Police say Johnson is no longer employed by the secretariat.
