WOODSTOCK, N.B. -- New Brunswick voters have elected Progressive Conservative candidate Stewart Fairgrieve to the provincial legislature in a byelection Monday in the riding of Carleton.
The seat was left vacant after the resignation of former premier David Alward, who stepped down in May after being appointed Canada's consul general in Boston.
Unofficial results indicate Fairgrieve won the five-way race with 3,144 votes, ahead of Liberal challenger Courtney Keenan who secured 2,151 votes.
Greg Crouse ran for the NDP, Andrew Clark for the Green party and Randall Leavitt for the People's Alliance.
Prior to the byelection, the Liberals held 26 seats in the legislature, the Tories 21 and the Greens one seat.
Elections NB says more than 1,500 people voted in advance polls.
