TRURO, N.S. -- A Canadian Human Rights tribunal says a native band in Nova Scotia retaliated against a woman who fought to become a fishing boat captain.
In a recent decision, the tribunal says the Millbrook First Nation interfered with the work Stacey Tabor was doing on a fisheries research team.
It also found the band made it difficult for Tabor to access funding to upgrade her qualifications and education.
The tribunal dismissed several other allegations Tabor made about the band's treatment of her.
Tabor argued that the band retaliated against her because of an earlier complaint she filed with the tribunal alleging Millbrook denied her a job in the fishery because of her gender.
The tribunal ruled in her favour.
Tribunal member Sophie Marchildon says she will try to help the two sides reach a settlement in the disputes, as they have not been able to reach an agreement.
