A woman is recovering in hospital after she was badly burned in a fire at a Halifax apartment building Thursday morning.

Police say the fire broke out on Caxtion Close just after 9 a.m. Investigators believe it started in one of the units on the second floor.

All residents were evacuated from the building.

“Sitting around, relaxing, and the fire alarm went off,” says tenant Sean Rhodenizer. “We did the normal thing in our apartment, just listened to it for a bit, then we walked around, finally saw smoke, so we got the kids ready and hopped in the truck to stay warm.”

Residents have since been allowed back in the building.

Fire and police officials are investigating the cause.
