A 30-year-old South African woman is facing charges after she allegedly assaulted two flight attendants on board an international flight Wednesday.

The Air Canada flight carrying 239 passengers left London, England and was bound for Toronto when it was temporarily diverted to Halifax.

Air Canada confirmed in a tweet that Flight 869 was diverting in Halifax due to an "unruly passenger." The flight touched down in Halifax around noon and took off for Toronto just before 3 p.m.

After the plane landed at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, RCMP officers boarded the aircraft and arrested a woman, Sgt. Alain LeBlanc said in a statement.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that a female passenger allegedly assaulted two flight attendants during the flight," he said.

The woman was taken into custody. Police say she is facing three counts of assault on an aircraft, one count of assault with a weapon, one count of causing a disturbance and one count of endangering an aircraft.

Nomantangwa Angel Babhekile Johansson from Sandhurst, Sandton is due to appear in Dartmouth provincial court Thursday.

AC Flight 869 flies direct daily from London's Heathrow Airport to Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
