A mother and son well-known to police are facing charges, including manslaughter and second-degree murder, after a man was stabbed to death in Dartmouth early Thursday morning.

Officers responded to a report of an altercation in the 100 block of Portland Street around 2:14 a.m.

“Once we arrived at the scene we located a 59-year-old man unconscious on the sidewalk, the victim of a stabbing,” said Halifax Regional Police spokesman Sgt. Pierre Bourdages.

“He was later pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The victim has been identified as 59-year-old Bradley Wayne Knoll.

Police say they believe the stabbing happened on the sidewalk and is not connected to any businesses in the area.

A 53-year-old woman was arrested in Dartmouth Thursday morning while a 22-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon in Halifax.

Bourdages says the stabbing was not a random incident as the victim and both suspects are known to each other.

Michelle Florence Rhyno of Dartmouth is facing charges of manslaughter and robbery. She was remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility overnight.

Michael Raymond Rhyno of Dartmouth is facing charges of second-degree murder, robbery and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

They both appeared in Dartmouth provincial court on Friday.

Donald Murray, defence lawyer for Michelle Rhyno, says he knows little about the case at this point.

“The police have all the information at the moment. They have more than my client does, and they certainly have more than I do and the Crown does,” he said.

“So we'll all have to wait and find out what the investigators think happened."

His client is has a long history of run-ins with the law.

Michelle Rhyno’s list of criminal convictions includes seven counts of impaired driving and 15 counts of robbery, as well as assault, fraud, possession, trafficking and voyeurism.

That adds up to nearly 30 counts since 1994 alone.

She and Michael Rhyno both convicted of robbery charges in relation to a 2011 case.

He was also well-known to authorities before this week’s incident.

Police say Michael Rhyno was also arrested under three outstanding public interest warrants related to three separate incidents.

He is facing charges of fraud under $5,000, breach of probation, theft under $5,000, possession of stolen goods under $5,000, resisting arrest and possession of cocaine in relation to an incident on Jan. 21.

Michael Rhyno is facing charges of robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft of a credit card, use of a stolen credit card and fraud under $5,000 in connection with an incident on March 25.

He is also facing charges of assault causing bodily harm in relation to an incident on April 29.

Michelle and Michael Rhyno are scheduled to appear in court again on July 29.

Police say they aren’t ruling out additional arrests in relation to this case.
