FREDERICTON - New Brunswick's minister of post-secondary education is encouraging administration and academic staff at the University of New Brunswick to resolve a strike that has shut down classes for about 10,000 students.

Jody Carr says he is monitoring the situation after professors, librarians and researchers went on strike Monday.

Picket lines have been set up at campuses in Fredericton, Saint John, Bathurst and Moncton.

The union that represents the striking workers and the administration are at odds over wages and workload.

Their contract expired June 30.
