A first-time entrant in New Brunswick’s political race says she is thankful, and even inspired, by the support she found across party lines after her bike was stolen earlier this week.

Green Party candidate Madeleine Berrevoets says she relies on her bike to canvass the riding of Fredericton-North, and she was shocked to find it stolen Monday night.

Berrevoets posted a plea for her bike’s return on Twitter. Her post picked up several retweets, including one from New Brunswick NDP Leader Dominic Cardy.

“For them to stand up and say, yup, we’re going to help this person out, because they’re a person and not because you’re a Green Party candidate, it’s great and it’s inspiring to see,” says Berrevoets.

Political differences aside, Cardy says he was just doing what he thought was right.

“I’ve met Madeleine a few times. She’s a lovely person and you don’t stop being a decent person just because a campaign is on,” says Cardy. “I know she uses her bike to get around a lot and I can’t imagine my car breaking down in the middle of a campaign, so I saw it and it doesn’t take a lot of time to retweet something.”

“If that can happen outside an issue not related to politics, why can’t we bring it inside?” asks Berrevoets.

Wednesday marked day seven on the campaign trail and there have been plenty of political blows dealt between all the parties, including the NDP and Green Party.

While some feel that political bickering it is an essential element in any election campaign, Berrevoets hopes the simple gesture of a political opponent retweeting a post about her missing bike will encourage less of a partisan divide.

She says the retweet may have been a well-calculated move to make the NDP look good, but she is happy either way.

“It makes you look good to work with other parties and I think that’s what a lot of people are forgetting, that it’s a good thing to work with your other MLAs, regardless of what their party is,” says Berrevoets.

Neither the Liberals nor the Tories have indicated whether they saw the tweet or knew about the missing bike.

Fredericton Police located Berrevoets bike on Tuesday.
