FREDERICTON -- Some groups in New Brunswick are calling for the government to make good on a months-old promise to hire more midwives in the province.

Sonya Burrill is the chair of the group New Brunswick Families for Midwives, a group that represents a large number of women who want to see more midwives in the province.

“February was very exciting for us,” she said. “That was the announcement of the funding for New Brunswick’s first pilot project, the first practice in New Brunswick, and they were detailing that they were going to hire four midwives, and they would be placed in one city.”

On Thursday, health minister Victor Boudreau said the money is in the budget, but the province is still working out the details.

Burrill says at this point she expected more.

“We were expecting that location announcement to be done by now. We were expecting some detailed legislation changes to be finished, and we also hoped that the first midwife would be hired. A lead midwife needs to be hired,” said Burrill.

“We have to look at things like the number of births, the other medical professionals that are in the area,” said Health Minister Victor Boudreau. “We’re working with the RHA’s to identify the exact location of where the pilot’s going to be, and then we’ll be able to start the hiring.”

Katie Harvey is pregnant with her first child. She says if it was possible, she would like to have a midwife.

“Just having the continuous support, and being able to build that relationship with one midwife, and have someone I trust who is going to be there with me when I’m at my most vulnerable,” said Harvey.

Minister Boudreau says there is no confirmed date for when the pilot project will be in place, but the New Brunswick Families for Midwives is hoping to see midwives in New Brunswick this year.
