The New Brunswick Liberals are demanding an apology from the NDP after a video depicting Leader Brian Gallant and members of his party as Hitler and the Nazis surfaced online.

NDP Portland-Simonds candidate Tony Sekulich tweeted the video on Wednesday and it was then shared by other NDP candidates and staff.

The Liberals said the video was “offensive and inappropriate.”

“Dominic Cardy talks about the new NDP. Maybe this is what he means,” said Liberal MP Dominic LeBlanc, co-chair of the New Brunswick Liberal campaign.

“It is the new NDP. Jack Layton certainly wouldn’t have put out videos depicting something amusing about Adolf Hitler and Nazi generals.”

New Brunswick NDP Leader Dominic Cardy said he has put out a directive to candidates and staff not to share the video, calling it a distraction.

Cardy said he didn’t find the video particularly funny, but called it a parody requiring no apology.

“We wonder why people get cynical about politics and it’s because, 100 hours before an election, we’re here talking about something like this, rather than something that’s going to lift people out of poverty, help them get their kids to school,” said Cardy.

Sekulich has since taken down the video and apologized for his actions.

“In the context of a campaign I can see how everything looks like an attack,” tweeted Sekulich Thursday evening. “I shared a video without thinking of that and I apologize.”
