Richard Dunn’s video of himself lip-syncing to Celine Dion’s ‘All by Myself’ in a Las Vegas airport has been viewed more than 20 million times on YouTube, and the experience has inspired him to write a book about his rise to viral stardom.

“It’s a terrifying feeling,” says the Moncton native. “I couldn’t stop the video if I wanted to.”

A few months ago, Dunn was bumped from a flight heading from Las Vegas to Atlanta, where he now lives. Bored and alone in the airport overnight, he decided to lip-sync to the song and film it on his iPhone. He says he had to get creative to capture some of the scenes.

“I taped my iPhone to a ruler, my ruler to the handle of the computer bag, I put the computer bag on a wheelchair and put the wheelchair on the moving sidewalk,” says Dunn.

The video was posted online on June 6. It went viral within 24 hours, even catching the attention of Celine Dion.

“I loved it,” said Dion in a video she posted in June. “But next time you’re stuck at the Las Vegas airport for hours and hours and hours, please be my guest at my show.”

Dunn and his family took Dion up on her offer and flew to Las Vegas to see her perform. They even got to meet the Canadian superstar.

“My daughter ran over to her and she picked her up and my daughter sang to her, she sang to my daughter and my green card almost exploded in my pocket,” says Dunn. “Celine Dion is holding my baby, singing to my baby.”

Dunn says he never imagined the video, which was intended only for his friends and family, would go viral. His new book tells the story behind the viral video for anyone who wants to make one of their own.

He says the secret to making a video go viral is to see opportunity where no one else does and tell the same story as everyone else does in a different way.

Dunn also says he has some ideas for another video, but he isn’t revealing any details just yet.
