The RCMP are investigating the discovery of a potentially explosive device found in the driveway of a home in Bois Blanc, N.B.

Police say it appears someone drilled a hole into the centre of a firewood log and inserted a can containing highly flammable material.

The resident found the wood in the driveway and planned to use it as firewood. The resident discovered the can when they tried to split the log.

Police were called to the home on Saturday.

"We take the discovery of a device like this very seriously," said Sgt. Marc Beaupré of the Grand Tracadie-Sheila RCMP. "If the device had been exposed to heat and exploded, people could have been seriously injured or killed."

Anyone with information about the device is asked to contact police.
