A New Brunswick teen accused of killing an 82-year-old widow in her own home is being sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation.
Kyle Edmund Scott, 19, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Sarah Kennedy.
He was originally set to enter a plea in Woodstock provincial court on Tuesday but it has been put off to a later date while Scott undergoes the psychiatric evaluation.
Police were called to Kennedy’s home on Route 555 in Richmond Corner, N.B. on Oct. 5.
They say a family member went to check on Kennedy after neighbours noticed her television had been left on for quite some time.
They found her body inside the home and called police. Officers arrested Scott later that afternoon.
“Very lovely lady, very lovely, and look where she is today,” says Neil Collicott, a friend of the victim. “An 82-year-old lady in her own home and look what takes place.”
The RCMP have released few details about their investigation and Kennedy’s death but they have confirmed Scott was in the possession of her vehicle when he was arrested.
Kennedy’s friends and family say they are growing anxious for answers and for the trial to begin.
Her aunt says people in the community have been asking her if she knows what happened.
“They ask questions and of course you say you don’t know, but everybody is shocked, and when you think about it, there’s an awful lot of us single women living alone,” says Mary-Lou Kennedy. “There’s an awful lot of widows, there’s seniors.”
Police are not confirming whether Kennedy and Scott knew one another.
“It is unimaginable and like I said, to think of the last while that Sarah was living, what she experienced, God only knows,” says Mary-Lou Kennedy.
Scott is due back in court on Nov. 27.
