GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, N.L. - A man charged with setting fire to a school, town hall and police station in a small Newfoundland community is due in court today.

Forty-eight-year-old man Donald Craig MacHaight of Morrisville is facing three counts of arson in relation to fires in Milltown-Head of Bay d'Espoir last week.

The elementary school was destroyed, and the RCMP station and town hall badly damaged in the fires.

MacHaight was arrested a short time later and remanded into custody.

The fires destroyed the gymnasium where most town events are held and badly damaged the interior of the town hall.

At the time, police said calls about the fire started coming in at about 4:40 in the morning on Jan. 17.

The community was going to start drawing up a list of needs for disaster assistance.
