A massive corn maze in Masstown, N.S., is doing more than entertaining children of the corn – it’s honouring local volunteer firefighters and helping in the fight against world hunger.

This is the fifth year for the ten-acre Masstown Market Corn Maze. Part of the admission price is donated to Harvest for Hunger Nova Scotia, and when the crop is harvested in the fall, the money raised from the auction goes to the Canadian Food Grains Bank.

“The corn is planted by one farmer,” said market founder Eric Jennings. “It's looked after, sprayed and so on by another farmer and harvested by someone else. And it's a real community event.”

Brandon Millen is one of the local farmers willing to give his time and expertise for the cause.

“It's a good thing to help out the community,” said Millen. “Not only are you helping the community, but you're helping a lot of people that need to eat too.”

Maze walker Rachel Powell says walking through the Masstown Market Corn Maze is a little bit like walking back in history, to a simpler way of life.

“Some quality family time, leave the electronics at home and just get out there,” said Powell.

“We just thought a corn maze would be a good thing to perhaps give some of the children from the city a little bit more information on how things are grown and a little bit of information about farming,” said Jennings.

Ian Machattie is a provincial volunteer with the Canadian Food Grains Bank. There are signs throughout the maze with messages about ending world hunger.

By joining in the fight, Machattie says local farmers are growing hope.

“When we can take a corn maze that's been used, and afterwards, actually harvest the crop and turn it into food aid, that's just a double win,” he said.

There's another special message in the corn that you can only see from the air. As a tribute to volunteer firefighters, this year's maze is in the shape of a firetruck and brigade badge, with the words "thank you" across the top.

“It was quite an honour to have the market honour the fire service for the county and the province – for the volunteers especially,” said Chief Wade Jennings of the Debert Fire Brigade.

A Harvest for Hunger picnic will be held at the maze on Sunday offering a chance for people to learn more about the cause.
