The Nova Scotia SPCA is trying to track down the owner of 14 beagles seized from a remote property in West Gore.

The organization’s investigations team responded to a call at the property on July 22. They seized 14 dogs, including seven newborn puppies and their mother, from the property.

“The puppies were in one kennel with their mother and all the other dogs were in separate kennels two by two,” said SPCA Special Const. Benjamin Amini.

He says it was a tip that led them to the West Gore property.

“From condition of the kennels we would say that (the dogs had been left for) about a couple of days, but again the major reason they were seized was because we were concerned that nobody would attend to them in future,” Amini said.

He says the SPCA has been unable to locate the dogs’ owner and they are asking for the public’s help in tracking him or her down.

“We believe that maybe the person was a breeder and was trying to sell these dogs, and there's a good possibility that somebody out there has previously attended this property,” Amini said.

The beagles were taken to the SPCA in Dartmouth for treatment and assessment. The SPCA says they all appear to be in good condition and the adult dogs are up for adoption.

The puppies will be available for adoption in the coming weeks.

For now though, they’re drawing lots of attention at the SPCA’s provincial animal shelter.

“As soon as we posted them it was non-stop phones and emails,” said Suzy Hector, the shelter’s office coordinator.

She says there’s a waiting list for those looking to adopt the puppies.

“They still have about a week before we can put them up. They do need to be eight weeks (old) before we spay and neuter, and then once that's done they'll be available to go home,” Hector said.

The SPCA is askinganyone with information about the beagles’ owner or history to call the provincial cruelty investigations team at 1-888-703-7722.
