A Cape Breton community is mourning the loss of a teenager who died this weekend after his motorized bike collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Devon Gilbert was a Grade 12 student in the shops program at Memorial Composite High School in Sydney Mines.

The school says counselling services have been made available to students in need.

Cape Breton Regional Police are still investigating the collision that took place Saturday evening on nearby Point Aconi Road..

Devon died of his injuries in a Halifax hospital on Sunday.

The 17-year-old is being remembered as an avid motocross racer, one well-liked by his peers.

“Great attitude — very nice, nice young man and words can’t describe what a loss it is,” said Avery MacDonald, the owner of Loch Lomond Motocross, where Devon had been racing for years.

The tight-knit community has been hit hard by the tragedy, he said.

“During a race we probably have anywhere from 100 to 120 entries, so everybody knows everybody and if we’re missing one person, everybody will miss him,” MacDonald said.

In a statement to CTV News, Devon’s father Billy Gilbert said the family is still in shock over the devastating loss.

“He left a lasting impression on people and it speaks volumes about his character and who he was as a person … He was a caring, loving and fun-filled person that people just loved to be around,” he said.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact police or Crimestoppers.

“It is an active investigation. At this point it’s too early to speculate on whether any charges will be laid,” said CBRP spokeswoman Desiree Vassallo.
