HALIFAX -- Two Canadian warships are back in Halifax following a six-week mission in the Caribbean that saw one vessel suffer an engine room fire as it was heading home.

A spokeswoman says HMCS Kingston and HMCS Glace Bay arrived in port Wednesday just after 9 a.m. to waiting friends and family.

The arrival comes as navy officials continue an investigation into the cause of a fire on board the Kingston.

They say the incident on Saturday caused minor damage as it was off the Carolinas, with preliminary information suggesting it was an electrical fire in the ship's forward machinery room.

Officials say the 55-metre coastal defence vessel was sailing for its home port after a mission in the Caribbean when the smoke and heat alarms sounded.

The navy says the ships did joint operations and supported multiple patrol aircraft sorties that resulted in the interception of about three metric tonnes of cocaine.
