FREDERICTON -- New Brunswick wants to reduce the amount of electronic waste that ends up in its landfills.

The provincial government has posted proposed changes to a regulation under the Clean Environment Act to allow for public comment.

If the changes go ahead, they would create a waste stewardship program for electronics, such as televisions, computers and fax machines.

The new rules would make industry responsible for managing their electronic products from the date of manufacture to the end of their use and disposal.

The province says the proposed changes would result in more than 3,000 tonnes of electronic waste a year being diverted from landfills.

If it gets final approval, the program could be operational by the fall of 2016.
