A 62-year-old woman has died after she was allegedly attacked by her son inside her Miramichi, N.B. home last night.

Police were called to the home on Hanover Street at approximately 8:47 p.m. Tuesday.

Marie Geraldine Godin was taken by ambulance to Miramichi’s Horizon Hospital. Police say she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

“The form of the attack we cannot release because of the ongoing investigation,” says Miramichi Police Cpl. Tony Porter. “It could affect the investigation itself.”

The victim’s son, 40-year-old Christian Jason Godin, was arrested a short distance from the home and taken into custody.

He appeared in provincial court this afternoon to face a charge of second-degree murder.

“Because of information received to the responding units, responding here last night, led to the arrest of that male,” confirms Porter.

Police say the attack is an isolated incident but area residents are on edge.

“It just concerns me, you know, because you don’t know who’s living next door and it could happen to anyone,” says neighbour Angela Cable. “It’s scary.”

The RCMP forensic identification unit from Bathurst is assisting in the investigation.

An autopsy will be performed in Saint John.

Godin is due back in court on May 8, following a 30-day psychiatric assessment.
