Babies are born every day, but it’s not every day that a father delivers his own child.

When a Moncton woman unexpectedly went into labour, her husband quickly sprang into action and delivered the baby on the bathroom floor of their home.

Thankfully, new dad Matt Boudreau was able to get some help from 911 dispatcher Andrew Vautour, who guided him through the delivery.

Nadia Boudreau arrived at 5:08 a.m. on Sept. 20. She and her family met Vautour for the first time on Tuesday so they could thank him for staying calm under pressure.

“It was very exciting to put a face to the person that guided me through one of my most incredible experiences, I’d say, in life so far,” says Boudreau.

New mom Melissa Boudreau says having her husband at the helm was an incredible experience.

“It’s a connection he’ll always have with his daughter,” says Melissa Boudreau. “He was the first person to hold her and deliver her.”

Vautour says he takes a lot of calls each day but it’s rare to see how they end up.

“It’s nice to be able to meet her and meet the family and be able to see what you did one day and how it looks the next day, and how she’s healthy and happy,” says Vautour.

Moncton’s 911 dispatch centre receives more than 100,000 calls each year; however, this was the first time Vautour delivered a baby over the phone.

Matt Boudreau says anyone who find themselves in a similar position should call 911 right away.

“Because they’re trained in that, Andrew proved it,” says Boudreau. “You know, that’s what they’re there for. It was just invaluable.”
