HALIFAX -- A Halifax police officer has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing for pursuing a stolen vehicle that crashed, seriously injuring the teenage driver.

An independent unit that investigates police conduct says the officer acted appropriately when he chased the SUV in the Halifax area on Nov. 9, 2012.

The Serious Incident Response Team says driving conditions were good when the SUV went out of control as it took the Northwest Arm Drive exit off Highway 102 and flipped onto its roof.

The unit says the driver was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery and has since recovered from serious head injuries.

He was sentenced in January to one year of probation with community service.
