Some homeowners on Prince Edward Island made a potentially-explosive discovery while doing some yard work at their Cherry Valley home.

The RCMP say the homeowners were tilling their property when they struck what they believed was a metal object. They dug the item out of the ground and quickly realized it was a dated military-style hand grenade.

They called the RCMP, who secured the hand grenade in a safe location until the explosive ordinance disposal team from 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown could be deployed to examine the device and render it safe.

Police say the team from 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown examined and secured the device before safely disposing of it.

No other devices were located and police believe it was a random incident.

The RCMP are reminding the public to call police if an explosive device is discovered.
