A Cape Breton company is “painting it forward” by offering $5,000 in free work to whomever they feel needs it the most.

The owner of Cape Breton Painters says it’s a way for them to give back to the community.

“The community has supported us over the last number of years, made us successful, so this is our way to give back," said owner and operator Rick MacKeigan.

The company isaccepting nominations online for anyone in need, from people who simply can't afford a fresh coat, to people facing health issues.

The one winner will receive up to $5,000 in free painting services.

"We're more or less looking for somebody that's in dire need,” said MacKeigan. “It could be a non-profit (or) people who have medical expenses (and) can't afford to have work done in their home."

Resident Mary Beth MacDonald is one nominee. With a bedridden son, she’s finding the time is tough.

"My boss nominated me the other day because I have a very busy life, having a special needs child,” she said. “So she thought it would be a nice break for me to have my house painted."

The Paint it Forward campaign launched less than a week ago and already has more than 70 applicants, with the majority being flood victims.

While only one winner will be chosen in January, it's expected not to be a one-time offer.

"We hope to make it at least a yearly event, if not more depending on need,” said MacKeigan. “Right now we're seeing quite a need, so we're hoping to narrow it down to every six months."

MacKeigan says a fresh coat of paint can not only brighten a room, but spirits too. With his business doing well since he starting it a few years ago, he feels this is the least he can do.

"If it wasn't for the community and their support, we wouldn't be in this situation.  So this is our way to give back," he said.
