A New Brunswick couple is mourning the loss of several pets after they died in a house fire Thursday night.

The fire started in a home on Post Road in Rusagonis, which is located roughly 25 kilometres from Fredericton.

Fire Chief Jody Price says the home was filled with smoke and heat when firefighters arrived at the scene.

According to the Canadian Red Cross, the young couple that lived there was not home at the time, but they lost a dog and two cats in the blaze.

Their home also received extensive damage in the fire.

The Red Cross says the couple is staying with relatives in the area and the organization is helping them with emergency purchases, such as clothing.

Price says the fire began in the home's air exchange system.
