A police emergency response team surrounded a home in the north end of Dartmouth early Tuesday after receiving a weapons complaint.
Police responded to the home on Canso Lane just after midnight.
Investigators say two women and a man were visiting the home to check on the wellbeing of one of the residents when a 35-year-old man picked up what appeared to be a gun.
Feeling threatened, the trio left the home and called police.
A short time later, police say a 40-year-old female resident was taken into custody.
Police believed her to be involved in the incident, but she has since been released without charges.
The emergency response team arrived on the scene around 5 a.m. and entered the home.
They searched the home but found no one inside.
Police believe the man may have fled the scene before they arrived.
Investigators with the Halifax Regional Police scoured the home for evidence and cleared the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Police say no weapon has been recovered. Investigators have yet to determine if the man was in possession of a firearm.
