It’s a school experience Tim Tanner and his work crew won’t soon forget.

A skull was found in the old Temperance Street School in New Glasgow by a company renovating the building.

Tim Tanner is the owner of the building. His company is renovating the school to convert it to apartments and townhouses.

He says the skull was found while work was being done in the attic.

“I heard him scream and I was actually in the classroom opposite,” says Tanner. “So I came over and I picked it up and yeah, it looked like a skull.”

Tanner says you find a lot of strange things in a 120-year-old building, but nothing as unusual as a skull.

“It could be very old,” he says. “It was just the top part. Like, if you could imagine my helmet, a bit like that. Missing the bottom part and the eye sockets.”

Since the discovery, police have remained at the school, which investigators are now describing as a potential crime scene.

“They confirm that the human remains found was indeed a human skull,” says Const. Ken MacDonald. “As a result, our forensic unit and our major crime unit are continuing to investigate at this time.”

There’s still no word on the age of the skull or how it ended up in the building. But that hasn’t stopped local residents from speculating.

“Hopefully it’s just something that was school-related, science-related, who knows,” says resident Trent MacDonald. “But hopefully it wasn’t foul play.”

Work crews were only on the job for a few hours Thursday morning before being sent home. It’s expected police will remain at the scene until the end of the week.
