People are being warned not to swim in or drink water from Lake Torment in East Dalhousie, Nova Scotia, because of a possible algae bloom.

The Department of Health and Wellness says it's a precaution since the risk of contracting an illness is low.

Blue-green algae blooms are naturally occurring and can produce toxins that can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.

It says boiling the water will not eliminate potential toxins.
