They came all the way from Labrador, and finally found new loving homes – but life hasn’t been a walk in the park for two puppies in Beaver Bank, N.S.

The pair was brought to Nova Scotia by Litters n’ Critters animal rescue in May. They were walking near their home with new owner, Jillian McClary, Tuesday night when two loose pit bulls attacked the puppies.

Neighbour Jenn Dalziel tried to help fend off the dogs.

“They kept attacking,” recalls Dalziel. “We were grabbing the dogs, we ended up kicking the dogs and screaming for help.”

Dalziel was bitten on her arm and her shoulder, but puppy Lokee got the worst of it.

“She has numerous puncture wounds that have gone deep as the bone. She has a fracture in one of her front legs,” McClary tells CTV News.

The incident was reported to police and Halifax Regional Municipality animal control. The animal services officer was unavailable for comment, but it’s believed the two dogs are under observation to determine whether they have rabies.

One puppy has become afraid of other dogs, and Lokee has racked up an expensive veterinary bill.

“Right now there’s $600,” says McClary. “We had to go to emergency in Burnside and when it’s said and done, I suspect around $3,000 with the medication.”

The biggest concern for McClary is for the children who will go back to a nearby junior high school this fall. She is worried they may be attacked if the pit bulls were to get loose again.

As for the puppies, McClary says she’ll be sticking close to home for now.
