A well-known Nova Scotia puppy broker spent the weekend in jail after being arrested for assault.

Gail Benoit is accused of assaulting a 25-year-old man in Waverley, N.S. on July 22. Bridgewater RCMP arrested Benoit on Friday.

Earlier this month, Benoit promised a Bridgewater court judge that she would not buy or sell any animals pending the outcome of another court case.

Benoit is accused of selling a New Brunswick woman’s dogs without her knowledge.

Saint John dog owner Cassie Craft told CTV News in January that a Nova Scotia woman had agreed to care for her two boxers while she attended school.

Craft dropped them off at a home in Waverley but when the woman with whom she entrusted her dogs cut off all communications, Craft went online, fearing they had been sold.

Her concerns grew when a Google search revealed she had boarded her dogs with Benoit, who was previously convicted of animal cruelty in 2009.

Police say the people who allegedly purchased the dogs from Benoit didn’t know they were stolen. The dogs, Diamond and Bentley, were eventually turned over to police and reunited with Craft.

Benoit is charged with fraud, theft under $5,000 and identity fraud in the case, which is due back in court later this week.
