The New Brunswick election is still four months away, but the push for votes has already begun.

Premier David Alward closed the spring sitting of the legislature on Wednesday. The Tories began the final days of their mandate celebrating their accomplishments, while keeping an eye on the future.

“The reality is, there’s a campaign all the time,” said Alward. “The work that we do every day, we want to demonstrate to New Brunswickers that we’re there to build New Brunswick and make New Brunswick stronger.”

But as the government trumpeted their achievements, the Opposition Liberals cried foul. Liberal Leader Brian Gallant said the Tories have done little since coming to power and that they have wasted their mandate.

“While the government was focused on breaking its promises, doing patronage appointments, playing politics and using taxpayers’ money to do partisan ads, we saw our economic indicators go in the wrong direction,” said Gallant.

In addition to being the last day of the spring sitting, Wednesday also marked the last day of the session before the provincial election in September, and the final day in the house for several veteran MLAs who are retiring.

Several veteran MLAs were honoured on Wednesday, including long-serving Liberal Roland Hache and House Speaker Dale Graham, who is retiring after two decades in the legislature.
