Summer weather has yet to arrive in the village of Port Morien, N.S., but the community’s “Summer People” are back in full force.

The community is full of scarecrows as part of the Morien Memories Summer Festival.

“It’s spirit,” said Yvonne Kennedy, the festival co-ordinator. “We’re talking about Maritime spirit in a little seaside village.”

The homemade characters depict everything from disgraced Senator Mike Duffy, to local MP Rodger Cuzner, to CTV’s own Cindy Day.

“Cindy Day is our favourite meteorologist,” Kennedy said. “And we’re asking, Cindy, where is our summer?”

People in the community spend a great deal of time creating their displays.

“You’re trying to make it kind of unique, folksy, quirky. That’s the fun part of it,” said participant Stan Munroe.

“It’s very secretive,” said Kennedy. “Nobody lets anyone else know what their Summer People display is.”

The Summer People used to take over Port Morien once a year, but the display is now going to be held every five years.

“It’s kind of a way to bring the community together. People get out and enjoy the sights,” said local resident Brittany Robinson.

“I get to see relatives that live in different parts of Canada, they come home for Morien Memories.”

The Summer People will be on display in Port Morien for another week.
