Police have charged a second person in connection with the murder of an elderly woman in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Jamie William Gallant, 18, of Dartmouth is due to appear in provincial court today to face charges of first-degree murder, robbery, and break and enter.

The charges stem from a homicide at a home on Jackson Road on Friday.

Police were called to the home just before 2 p.m. after a neighbour noticed the back door had been kicked in and left open. When they arrived on the scene, officers found the body of 79-year-old Lavinia Campbell inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her death has been ruled a homicide following an autopsy.

Police say they arrested Gallant as they responded to a break and enter in the 200 block of Albro Lake Road in Dartmouth shortly before 7 a.m. Monday.

When they arrived at the scene, they found Gallant inside the home and identified him as a suspect in the Jackson Road homicide. He was arrested and turned over to homicide investigators.

Gallant is the second suspect to be charged in connection with the murder after police arrested a 15-year-old boy Sunday afternoon in Dartmouth. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, robbery, break and enter, and breach of conditions.

Gallant is also facing charges of break and enter, and trespass by night in connection with the incident on Albro Lake Road.

Police say they don't expect to make any further arrests at this time.
