At least seven people are temporarily homeless following an overnight fire at a six-unit building in Truro, N.S.

Dan Bedell of the Canadian Red Cross says the fire was reported early Saturday morning at 187 Arthur Street.

He says the blaze was mostly confined to one apartment, but sent smoke elsewhere through the two-storey structure.

Disaster volunteers from the Red Cross arranged emergency lodging and food for a couple and their four-month-old infant from one unit. Three other adults have arranged to stay with family or friends for the time being.

Bedell says the remaining units were vacant or occupants were away at the time.
