HALIFAX - The Red Cross says five people were displaced by three residential fires in separate communities in Nova Scotia on Monday.

A fire reported at about 6 p.m. destroyed the home of an elderly couple in the Bridgeville area, about 10 kilometres south of New Glasgow.

In Halifax, the Red Cross says it arranged emergency lodging and food for a man and woman whose second-storey apartment was gutted in a mid-afternoon fire.

They were treated at hospital for smoke inhalation and later released.

In Windsor, a man was treated for a slight burn from a pre-dawn fire that destroyed a house and damaged an adjacent, vacant duplex.

Officials are investigating to determine the causes of the fires.
