One person was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Thursday morning after a small explosion inside a chemistry lab at the University of New Brunswick.

Emergency crews responded to the university in Fredericton just before 10 a.m.

Investigators say the person was working with a glass vessel at the time of the explosion.

F.J. Toole Hall was closed for a time but has since reopened to the public, except for the lab where the explosion occurred.

“The rest of the building is open and…the classes will resume,” says university spokesperson Sonya Gilks.

“The products inside were deemed to be non-volatile, in a safe atmosphere,” says assistant fire chief Dave McKinley.

This is the second explosion to have occurred at a lab at the university in less than a month.

Emergency responders were called to the second floor of the Enterprise Building on Garland Court on Oct. 6 after an explosion involving a chemical inside a small glass vessel.

Two people sustained minor injuries in that incident.
