Students and parents are expressing shock after learning about sex allegations against a Moncton area high school teacher.

Kenneth Gunn, a teacher at Harrison Trimble High School, is facing charges of possession of child pornography, sexual exploitation and sexual assault.

The incidents are alleged to have occurred between September 2011 and November 7, 2013, involving two females who were under the age of 18 at the time.

Gunn taught math and environmental science and was also a tutor.

“Our school district has clear processes in place that adhere to Department of Education and Early Childhood Development policies,” says Supt. Gregg Ingersoll. “These procedures outline how incidents regarding student safety are to be handled, including when it is necessary to request support from local authorities.”

Some parents and students say they were stunned to learn about the charges against a teacher they liked and respected.

“He has been a really good teacher,” says parent Don Terry. “My son speaks highly of him. We were quite shocked to hear that he was going through what he was going through.”

“He was a really good guy and he was well trusted around all the students and he was able to provide much help for all the students,” says student Julian Pearson.

Two senior RCMP investigators testified during Monday’s bail hearing, along with the accused.

The judge said she would need more time to review the case; a decision on the bail application is expected Wednesday morning. Gunn will remain in custody until then.
